Fort Wayne Police, along with state and federal law enforcement, served a warrant just after noon Thursday on a Speedway Drive business to look for a synthetic drug known as "spice."

Investigators went to the business, believed to be using the name B&B Distributors, at 4914 Speedway Drive, said FWPD spokeswoman Raquel Foster. The warrant was to see if the synthetic cannabinoids were being made or distributed here, she said.

"We are looking for any evidence of the manufacture or distribution of synthetic cannabinoids, also known as spice," Foster said. "We have been trying very hard to tackle the issue of spice, as you know."

Spice, which mimics the effects of marijuana, was banned in Fort Wayne In 2010. In March, Gov. Mitch Daniels signed into law a ban on synthetic drugs Under the ban, retailers could lose their business licenses for a year if they're caught selling the synthetic drugs.

Several law enforcement agencies were involved, including the Indiana State Police; Drug Enforcement Agency; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Internal Revenue Service; State Excise Police; and the Allen County prosecutor's office.

Police removed about 20 employees from the business and would interview some of them, but Foster said she had no knowledge of any arrests early Thursday afternoon. Some of the employees idled outside the building, watching the investigation unfold, while others waited in a large FWPD passenger van.

Police also executed a search warrant Thursday at a location in the 2500 block of East Tillman Road in connection with the same investigation, Foster said.

Foster would not say how much, if any, spice had been found. The search Thursday came after a lengthy investigation, she said.
