Wind causes power outages around Allen County

Utility expects to restore service to all by midnight

Indiana Michigan Power Co. says outages across Fort Wayne and Allen County early Friday were caused by the windy conditions from the winter storm.

Shortly after 2 p.m., the utility said fewer than 200 customers remained without power around Fort Wayne. It estimated that power would be restored to all the Fort Wayne-area customers by midnight.

Around 8:30 a.m., I&M's website map showed 1,797 customers were without power in the Allen County area. Gary Visel, an I&M spokesman, said high winds associated with the winter storm caused the outages. The company received reports of several downed poles in Allen County; many of the reports came in at around 4 a.m. The largest pockets involved 325 customers but other outages were scattered across the county.

Power went out shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday in southwest Fort Wayne when a tree fell on a power line, but was restored by 3:30 p.m. The outage snarled traffic in the area around West Jefferson Boulevard, Getz Road and Covington Road.
