FORT WAYNE — Area sports-related clubs and programs will have a new venue to practice and compete in with the opening of the SportONE/Parkview Fieldhouse.

City and county officials joined Parkview Health and Ortho NorthEast to celebrate the $7 million building’s completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, which included tours of the space.

The 57,000-square-foot center, 3946 Ice Way, near Lima Road and Fernhill Avenue, can host volleyball, basketball, wrestling, cheer and dance events and tournaments.

It features eight hardwood, regulation-size volleyball courts, four outdoor sand courts and six basketball courts.

Parkview and Ortho NorthEast share naming rights for the facility, but it was built through funds from investors, said Eric Clabaugh, Parkview spokesman.

Jay Golsteyn, the facility’s general manager, anticipates it will draw more than 20,000 out-of-town families for events scheduled in 2013 while saving local families money in travel costs.

Mayor Tom Henry, who spoke during Thursday’s ceremony, said as a parent he knows about traveling for his children’s club sports and remarked about how the local facility could benefit the economy. He called the venue “another asset for the city of Fort Wayne,” to draw more visitors.

Golsteyn said SportONE/Parkview Fieldhouse’s busiest time will be January through April and possibly into the summer months. Weekdays will be reserved mostly for camps and adult leagues, and weekends will be event-driven. He said there will be some opportunities for community members to come to the facility for open gym.

The upstairs area that includes a weight room and office space will house Athletes With Purpose, a local sports performance company that trains area athletes.

SportONE/Parkview Fieldhouse will also feature a restaurant, training center, weight rooms and private shower rooms. Members of the community can attend a public open house Jan. 12.
