FORT WAYNE — Fort Wayne police raided a north-side business and a south-side home Thursday looking for synthetic marijuana.

Officers searched a building at 4914 Speedway Drive, off Coliseum Boulevard between Coldwater and Lima roads, and a home in the 2500 block of Tillman Road.

Police believe the group on Speedway was doing business under the name B&B Distributors, spokeswoman Raquel Foster said.

Police were looking for evidence related to manufacturing or distributing synthetic cannabinoids, more commonly known as synthetic marijuana, or Spice. Evidence was removed from both places, police said, but they did not say what it was.

About 20 people were escorted out of the building on Speedway just after noon. One person was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor resisting law enforcement during that search. No one else was arrested, police said.

The Indiana State Police; federal Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the Internal Revenue Service; state Excise Police; and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office were also involved in the investigation.

Spice, K2 and other forms of synthetic marijuana have been an ongoing problem in the city, Foster said.

In May, the Fort Wayne City Council approved an ordinance amendment allowing businesses to be treated as drug houses, in an attempt to curb the sale of K2 or Spice.

The drugs’ constantly changing formulas are a challenge police face when enforcing drug laws, Foster said.

“What many of the manufacturers and distributors have been doing is simply changing their formula so they are in compliance with the state law,” Foster said.

Foster cited several instances in the city in recent years when people became very violent after using the drugs.
