The sixth year of Komets Kare Package was successful in many ways, including the most basic one. Three family members heard about the program to collect donations to be sent to Indiana troops and signed their sons up to receive monthly care packages.

``Those are already in the mail, and they'll be getting them in six or seven days,'' said Montana Speicherweimer, co-founder of Hoosiers Helping Heroes which coordinates sending the packages. ``Now, they'll be getting one every month.''

The three-game campaign sponsored by The News-Sentinel, WANE, Federal Express and the Komets asks fans to donate items such as food, entertainment material and personal hygiene products which can be shipped to Indiana servicemen and women serving overseas. Komets fans filled two huge pallets of materials over the last week.

``It keeps growing,'' Speicherweimer said. ``Even with hard economic times, people are not forgetting our heroes. We still have soldiers down at Guantanamo Bay who are on lockdown now because the 9/11 trials are starting. Any hero who is away from his family, we'll take care of.''

Hoosiers Helping Heroes sends care packages to more than 50 Indiana servicemen and women each month. Families can sign up for their loved ones to receive the packages by going to hoosiershelpingheroes.org.

The results of the Komets Kare Package campaign helps supply Hoosiers Helping Heroes through the winter. The first care packages from this year's donations will be sent out Jan. 12.

``I had a Vietnam vet come up and say how much it meant to him,'' Speicherweimer said. ``He was a Purple Heart recipient and said when he was in Vietnam he didn't get care packages, so it meant a lot to him to see us supporting the soldiers of today.''
