Matthew 25 receives 2 large grants from St. Joseph Community Foundation

Who the money went to

Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic: $130,000. Support for the full time Medical Director's salary.

Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic: $110,000. Support for the full time Dental Director's salary.

Super Shot: $65,000. Support for immunizations at the following sites: Anthony Medical Center, West State Street Clinic and United Hispanic Americans.

A Hope Center: $45,000. The grants are $35,000 for the medical model supporting limited medical services and $10,000 for a new ultrasound machine from the Charles and Henrietta Pfeiffer Fund.

Fort Wayne Clubhouse / Carriage House: $25,000. To assist adults with limited resources in reclaiming their lives from the devastation of serious mental illness by providing unique and effective Clubhouse Model psychosocial rehabilitation.

YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne: $19,445. Support for the Obesity Wellness Network and the Diabetes Prevention Program.

Aung San Suu Kyi Welcoming Committee: $1,500. For sponsorship of the Aung San Suu Kyi public event on Sept. 25.

Catherine Kasper Place: $10,500. Funding for a community needs assessment and strategic planning consultation to determine how to best respond to refugee and immigrant needs in Allen County.

Catholic Charities: $10,000. Support for the refugee health administrative assistant position.

Center for Nonviolence: $10,000. Funding for health education, case management, medical translation and other related services to non English speaking populations who have significant barriers to health services.

Fort Wayne Rescue Mission Ministries, Charis House: $5,500. To support the Charis House medical clinic with $3,000 for operating support and supplies; and $2,500 for durable medical equipment from the Charles F. and Henrietta Eckart Pfeiffer Fund.

Hope House: $12,500. To contract with Headwaters Counseling to provide therapeutic family support to homeless, chemically dependent women and their families and to provide some recovery support groups and addictions counseling on site.

Living Luke's Legacy Clinic: $1,500. Funding for basic medical supplies for the clinic.

Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic: $3,785. To continue the collaboration with the YWCA Northeast Indiana to provide healthcare education/services for the clients residing in the Crisis Shelter, through a Matthew 25 licensed Family Nurse Practitioner.

Midwest Alliance for Health Education: $5,000. Support for the Health is the Key to My Heart program, which provides free cardiovascular screenings for approximately 500 inner city minority and low-income Fort Wayne residents.

SCAN: $15,000. Support for medical transportation costs for Healthy Families clients.


Blue Jacket : $1,500. To support the urban garden initiative.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne: $1,500. Support for the Triple Play which equips members with skills needed to become healthy, fit and successful adults.

Cedars HOPE: $1,500. Support for permanent housing for women who are homeless and have a serious mental illness.

East Allen Family Resource Center : $1,500. To support the nutrition program with fruits and vegetables for the afternoon snacks for children in the LEARN program.

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Fort Wayne: $1,500. Funding for 24-hour emergency shelter for homeless families.

International House: $1,500. Support for the Women's Club helping international women gain a better understanding of American culture, and to build language skills in a non threatening setting.

Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic: $1,500. Support for the Fort Wayne program, which provides pro bono legal advice and representation for low income residents of Allen County.

Society of St. Andrew: $1,500. Packing and freight to deliver about 42,000 pounds of fresh produce at no cost to hunger relief agencies in Allen County.

St. Mary's Catholic Church: $1,500. Support for the Emergency Assistance Fund to provide funding to Ave Maria House clients for emergency transportation, housing, and food.

St. Mary's Catholic Church: $1,500. Purchase of fresh vegetables for the St. Mary's Soup Kitchen.

YWCA Northeast Indiana: $1,500. Support for the YWCA's 2012 Circle of Women benefitting the YWCA's domestic violence programs.


Hope House: $1,027. Enable the Executive Director to participate in the National Association of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) held in Indianapolis on August 12 15, 2012.

Whitington Homes & Services for Children and Families: $1,000. For training of Case Managers and Therapists in Drug and Alcohol Abuse so that they can better prevent problems with alcohol and other drugs before they occur, intervene when they do, and promote recovery for those who are already addicted.


The St Joseph Community Foundation announced $488,257 in grants to 29 local organizations to improve health, wellness and health care access to the low-income in the Allen County.

The two largest grants went to Matthew 25 to fund a full-time director of dentistry position, one for $110,000 and another for $130,000. Several other recipients of were awarded larger grants as well. Super Shot received $65,000. A Hope Center received $45,000 and Fort Wayne Clubhouse/Carriage House received $25,000. The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne received $19,445.

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ have had active ministry programming in this community since 1868, and through this Foundation have invested $13,744,334 through 885 grants into 171 Allen County agencies since the sale of St. Joseph Medical Center in 1998.

All grants are focused on helping to establish and maintain centers in mental, physical and spiritual health care delivery to the low income in our community and build programming to address gaps that prevent individuals from attaining health and wellness.

In addition to providing grants, the Foundation also provides programming for gaps in services including operating “Project Connect” which provides the Medical Interpretation & Healthcare Navigation Program for Burmese refugees and immigrants, and a Resource Directory of Allen County's low cost, quality healthcare resources.
