Man falls through ice in Fort Wayne; saved by dive team

A Fort Wayne Fire Department dive team rescued a man who fell through ice Tuesday while trying to save a dog at a small south-side lake.

Divers responded at about 3:19 p.m. to 1823 Shamrock Road at Stone Lake, a small body of water just southeast of Foster Park, according to a fire department news release. The crew found one man clinging to the ice about 70 feet from shore, the release said.

A diver in a water rescue suit crawled out to the man and pulled him to safety, the release said. Other crew members then pulled the man and the team member to shore, it said. The whole rescue took about nine minutes.

The man, who said he was trying to rescue a dog that had fallen through the ice, was treated at the scene and did not need an ambulance, the release said. The dog also was fine, the release said.
