Families are invited to visit Fort Wayne Community Schools' elementary, middle and high schools during Tuesday Tours on Tuesday and Jan. 22 and 29.

To help families make an informed decision before the Feb. 1 deadline to apply for a student transfer, they can visit any school in the district on those days to see teachers and students in action, an FWCS news release said. Visitation hours are 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. for most elementary schools and 8-10 a.m. for middle and high schools.

Bunche and Towles Montessori schools will offer tours 8:30-10:30 a.m. and noon-2 p.m. Bunche, 1111 Greene St., also will have an open house 1-4 p.m. this Sunday.

Every year, about a third of families with students in FWCS make use of transfers through the district's School Choice program, the news release said. Students are assigned to a school based on their home address, but their parents can apply to have the child attend one of the other FWCS schools.

Schools offering specialized magnet programs include Bunche Early Childhood Center (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten) and Towles Intermediate School (Grades 1-8), Montessori instruction; Whitney Young Early Childhood Center (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten), Weisser Park Elementary School (Grades 1-5) and Memorial Park Middle School (Grades 6-8), fine arts programs; Croninger Elementary, communications; and Irwin Elementary, math and science.

Each FWCS high school also has a special program of study, such as Northrop, Project Lead the Way-Engineering; North Side, global studies; Snider, Project Lead the Way-Biomedical; South Side, international baccalaureate; and Wayne, New Tech Academy and business.

Transfer applications must be completed and returned to FWCS by Feb. 1, the news release said. Applications are available at each school and at www.fortwayneschools.org.

If more students apply for a school than it has space available, a lottery will be held to decide what students are accepted. If needed, lotteries will be held Feb. 22 in the Board Room at the Grile Administrative Center, 1200 S. Clinton St., with the drawings for elementary schools at 9 a.m. and for middle and high school at 1 p.m. The lotteries are open to the public.
