Parents interested in touring Fort Wayne Community Schools in order to determine interest in possible transfers have two more opportunities to do so before an important deadline.
Tuesday marked the start of three days – Jan. 22 and Jan. 29 are the next two opportunities – designed to allow families to tour most of the district's elementary, middle and high schools and other learning centers.
According to information released by the district, about one-third of families – FWCS has about 31,000 students -- within the district participate in the school choice program. Students are initially assigned to schools based on where they reside, but they are allowed to choose to attend any of the district's other schools.
However, the deadline to complete and submit a transfer request is Feb. 1, with applications available at each school and at www.fortwayneschools.org.
On Tuesday afternoon, Whitney Young Early Childhood Center Principal Sherry Britt said fewer than a dozen parents had visited the pre-K/kindergarten facility at 1026 E. Pontiac St. That wasn't much of a concern, however, because, as Britt explained, parents already exercise any number of options – email, FWCS' website and old-fashioned word of mouth – to get a feel for what any given school has to offer or to stay informed.
At Whitney Young, for example, a daily newsletter that contains photos of activities and news of the day is emailed to the parents of the 270 youngsters who attend the school.
“All of our schools are good,” said Britt, who also served as principal at Fairfield Elementary. “There is so much offered now, if a parent doesn't take advantage of it, shame on them.”
FWCS conducts lotteries to determine which students will be able to transfer if there are more applicants than spots. Those lotteries will be held Feb. 22, with elementary students set for 9 a.m. and middle and high school drawings set for 1 p.m.
The lotteries are open to the public and will be held in the board room at the Grile Administrative Center, 1200 S. Clinton St., according to the district.
