Apartment association offers safety tips in light of string of robberies

Since Jan. 7, robbers have attacked several people arriving at local apartment complexes.

Officer Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne Police spokeswoman, said in an email that all but one of the apartment robberies have involved guns.

In response to the recent robberies, the Apartment Association of Fort Wayne-NE Indiana said Friday it has compiled safety information and apartment complexes are planning meetings.

“While crime can happen anywhere, apartment residents need to be more aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity,” said AAFW Executive Director Beth Wyatt in a news release.

Information that would be helpful to the Fort Wayne Police Department in solving these crimes includes physical descriptions of any suspicious persons, along with the make, model, color and license plate numbers of their vehicles, according to the release.

Several apartment communities are distributing safety tips and letters to residents as well as planning community meetings to provide information to residents and allow them to meet their neighbors, according to the release.

Any suspicious activity needs to be reported to the property management staff as well as local law enforcement, the association said.

During a similar string of robberies back in 2011, the association compiled several resources that it is again providing, including a safety list under “Violent Crime and Personal Safety” under Resources at National Crime Prevention Council,
