FORT WAYNE — Dozens of shell casings littered the ground Saturday afternoon at the scene of a shooting that left a man dead and another seriously injured on Fort Wayne's south end.

It was not clear exactly how many shots were fired, and police were still trying to piece together what transpired in the 7900 block of Serenity Drive, a street that loops past Centennial Townhomes and Arbors of South Towne Square Apartments.

About 4:10 p.m., a report of a shooting sent police to the neighborhood near Tillman Road and South Anthony Boulevard. In a vehicle, officers found one victim, who died at the scene, said officer Chris Felton, a city police spokesman.

On Sunday the Allen County Coroner's Office identified the dead man as Jermaine D. Foster, 30, of Fort Wayne. Foster died of a gunshot wound or wounds, according to a news release.

A second victim was found nearby in an apartment building at 7962 Serenity Drive, and he was taken to a hospital in serious condition, Felton said.

Investigators questioned several witnesses and neighbors, some of whom reported hearing two volleys of gunfire. Nothing indicated that the victims had fired any shots, Felton said.

A neighbor, whose patio overlooked part of the crime scene, told The Journal Gazette she heard shots but did not see anything.

"It was quite a few gunshots," said the woman, who declined to give her name for fear of retribution.

"It sounded kind of close."

Felton said several people were around when the shooting happened but left before speaking to detectives.

"The people who left the scene are asked to contact the police so they can be interviewed," he said.

Officers using a police dog were not successful in tracking the shooter or shooters. Investigators had no suspects and had not determined a motive, Felton said.

Saturday's sprawling crime scene encompassed several apartment buildings, parking lots and much of Serenity Drive. Investigators found evidence scattered throughout the area, including tire tracks, footprints and shell casings.

"There's shell casings everywhere, apparently," Felton said.
