February begins in a single-digit deep freeze today, but it follows one of the warmest Januaries in Fort Wayne since the National Weather Service began keeping records in 1897.

The National Weather Service reports that the average high temperature in January was 35.9 degrees, which makes it the fourth-warmest January on record. The warmest was in 2006, with average high temperature of 36.9 degrees.

January temperatures ranged from 64 on Wednesday to 2 on Jan. 2.

Precipitation was 3.43 inches, 1.17 inches more than typical. Snowfall was only 2.6 inches – less than a tenth of the record January snowfall of 29.5 inches in January 1982.
