A 16-year-old on an ATV was struck by a car on a rural DeKalb County road Wednesday afternoon, and Indiana conservation officers say his helmet and other protective clothing likely saved him from serious injury.

A little after 3 p.m., Tylor Kooistra of Auburn was going north on Daisy Lane and attempted to cross County Road 68, according to a statement from conservation officers.

The ATV pulled into the path of a car and was thrown into a nearby ditch, along with the teen, officers said.

Kooistra was knocked unconscious and taken to a Fort Wayne hospital with a broken leg and other minor injuries, the conservation officers aid.

“Tyler was wearing a helmet, as well as other protective clothing and equipment at time of the accident which likely saved him from much more serious injuries,” the officers’ statement said.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and EMS, the Jackson Township Fire Department and the Indiana State Police also responded to the scene.
