Similarities between an attempted robbery and a robbery, both reported Saturday night in northeast Fort Wayne, lead investigators to believe the crimes are linked, said officer Raquel Foster, a police spokeswoman.
The attempted robbery was reported about 7:50 p.m. In that case, a man told police he was jogging toward Laverne and Forest avenues when he saw a dark sport utility vehicle, possibly a GMC Jimmy or Chevrolet Blazer, stopped at the intersection, according to a police report.
Three men in dark clothes were standing outside the SUV, and one of them pulled a gun, pointed it at the jogger and told him “this is a robbery,” the report stated.
The jogger had no money, and the men left. They were last seen heading west on State Boulevard, the report said.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m., the second holdup was reported. A woman told police she was walking her dog near Forest Park Boulevard and Delaware Avenue when men got out of a dark SUV and demanded her purse, a police report stated. She complied and then ran to a nearby house to seek help.
Foster said police believe the crimes are connected because of the victim’s similar descriptions of the robbers and the getaway vehicle, along with the proximity of the holdups in time and place.
“That is not an area where we typically see those types of crimes,” she said. “Obviously, it can happen anywhere.”
Foster said investigators have some leads but that the robbers have not been identified.
