Old Fort re-enactors could soon have a new roof over their heads.

Historic Fort Wayne is asking for donations to pay for the project, which will cost $55,000 and $60,000. So far, it has collected or has pledges of more than $36,000, according to a news release.

After 37 years, the Old Fort, 1201 Spy Run Ave., is in need of new roof. The fort, a reproduction of the one built in Fort Wayne by Maj. John Whistler in 1816, opened shortly before July 4, 1976, to celebrate the nation’s bicentennial. Since then, thousands of re-enactors, residents, tourists and school classes have filled its grounds to learn what life was like in pioneer days. Re-enactors take part in a variety of exercises, including a weekend commemoration last fall to observe the 200th anniversary of the siege of Fort Wayne during the War of 1812.

And it’s showing some wear. Board member Sean O’Brien said in the news release, “you can really tell when you get right up eye level, almost every high wind, we lose some shingles now.”

Board President Norm Gable said in the news release that Historic Fort Wayne hopes to reroof all the main buildings inside the palisade walls this year. Work on the first building began this week with the enlisted barracks. Work on the final buildings will begin as the remaining money is raised.
