IPFW photography instructor Jim Gabbard spent spring break of March 2012 documenting what many of us have heard only through exotic tales or seen on television programs.

Gabbard, a visual communication and design continuing lecturer, spent the time shooting photos and video as IPFW students and faculty provided medical and dental care to people living in the Cien Fuegos region of the Dominican Republic, an IPFW news release said.

An exhibit of his work is on display now through March 17 at the Visual Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts Building at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, 2101 Coliseum Blvd. E. The exhibit is open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. weekends.

Admission is free and open to the public.

IPFW students and faculty are working in the Cien Fuegos area in conjunction with the Fort Wayne-based Barnabas Task ministry and a university in Santiago, Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM).

For information, call the Department of Visual Communication and Design at 481-6709 or visit www.ipfw.edu/vcd.
