By February, any person with long hair has probably wanted to give up, throw their mess of knots and dry ends up into a pony tail and say, “Wake me when it’s spring.”
It’s not so dire, really. Carmen Crabill, owner of Carmen & Co. Hair Professionals in Fort Wayne, has some tips to keep your hair healthy during the winter.
Problem No. 1: My hair looks like I’m touching one of those static electricity balls from physics class.
Solution: Invest in a smoothing cream, an anti-frizz product or a frizz-free serum to keep locks tamed. Before your brush your hair, spray hairspray on it. Keep a dryer sheet on hand and run it down the length of your hair to keep it from sticking up because of static.
Problem No. 2: My hair is so dry, my split ends have split ends.
Solution: Crabill recommends a deep conditioner at a salon, spending 15 minutes under a hood dryer. This will help seal in moisture and put the protein back in your hair. When the stylist rinses the conditioner out, your locks will be soft and luxurious. In between salon appointments, Crabill suggests using an at-home leave-in conditioner before you blow dry your hair. This will help with fly-aways and keep dry hair conditioned until your next shampoo. Let your hair air dry 80 percent, and then blow dry it. This will keep moisture in your locks, Crabill says. She also says professional products are best for dry hair. Over-the-counter hair products contain wax and water. The wax might make hair look shiny, but it coats the hair and prevents it from breathing. It can get into hair follicles and impede growth.
Problem No. 3: My hair is dull. Dishwater is sparkly by comparison.
Solution: Hot water opens the cuticle and creates frizzy, dull-looking hair, so at the end of your shower, rinse your hair in cool water. That closes the cuticle and gives hair shine.
Problem No. 4: My hair is so weak, it keeps breaking.
Solution: First off, be sure your hair is completely dry before stepping outside. If it is wet and you go outside in the cold, Crabill says, the hair can freeze and break. Also, take a vitamin D supplement in liquid gel form. The gel will absorb into the body and strengthen not only hair, but nails too. Vitamin D also helps hair grow. When combing your hair while wet, use a pick instead of a brush. When using a brush, stick with a thermal round brush, which won’t rip or snag hair.
