Two Fort Wayne Community Schools students were removed from a school bus early Wednesday after police received a report of a student armed with a weapon.

The weapon was actually a lookalike gun, and the students at Lakeside Middle School, 2100 Lake Ave., were removed from the bus before it arrived at the school and driven to the school by another FWCS employee.

A Fort Wayne police officer interviewed the children at Lakeside. One of them said he was walking to the bus stop and found the gun under bushes. He was showing it to kids at the bus stop, then stowed it in his little brother's backpack before getting on the bus.

The officer reported that he explained the considerable danger involved in carrying something that can be mistaken for a gun.

The officer's report did not specify what kind of an imitation or toy gun the boys had. In other cases, such lookalike guns have been Airsoft guns, FWCS spokeswoman Krista Stockman said. Those hobby items shoot soft pellets.

Stockman said she couldn't release the age or grade of the student or specifics on disciplinary action, although the FWCS code of conduct for weapons includes extended suspension, expulsion or referral to police as possible actions, she said.
