The National Weather Service is warning that higher temperatures this weekend could cause the large amount of snow the area received this week to melt and lead to potential flooding.

Fort Wayne received about 9 inches of snow overnight Tuesday, added to 1 inch already on the ground. Above-freezing temperatures have some of that depth disappearing. It was 8 inches deep at Fort Wayne International Airport at 7 a.m. today.

As of 8 a.m., crews from the Fort Wayne Street Department were continuing to plow residential streets and were expected to complete neighborhood streets late Thursday, according to city spokesman Frank Suárez. Overnight, crews plowed about 70 percent of the residential streets in the city.

Because of the heavy snowfall, residents who normally have their garbage and recycling picked up Thursday and Friday will be one day behind this week.

The National Weather Service reported that many areas across northern Indiana, northwest Ohio and parts of southwest lower Michigan received between 5 and 12 inches of snow Tuesday night.

The weather service described it as “a very wet snow with an average liquid equivalent ratio of 10 to 1.” Temperatures are going to rise into the 40s Saturday-Monday leading to melting snow.

With the ground already moist and nearly saturated, the added melt could lead to increased runoff and rising river flows, according to the weather service. Rain is also possible Sunday and Monday.
