Bishop Luers High School recently created a new scholarship fund in honor of the Rev. Fred Link, a former principal, band and choir director, and theology and music teacher at the school, 333 E. Paulding Road.

The school announced the launch of the Father Fred Link, OFM, Franciscan Spirit Scholarship during a reception following the boys and girls basketball games on Feb. 1, a news release said.

Winter Homecoming activities that evening also included recognition of Franciscan Order of Friars Minor members who have served previously at the school, the news release said. Performing arts alumni from 1970-1984 also were honored.

Link started at Bishop Luers in 1970 as a theology and music teacher, the news release said. He later directed the band and Minstrels show choir programs, and served as principal from 1980-1984. Link left Luers in 1984.

While at Luers, Link was involved in starting the first show choir invitational in the nation; organizing the school's Walk-a-Thon, a school fundraiser for which students raise money by walking around Foster Park; developing the phrase, “Luers Spirit,” which the school still uses today; building the current football field; and starting the LuersKnight fundraiser.

Link now serves as pastor of St. Clement Catholic Church in Cincinnati.
