LONDON, Ontario (AP) — Meryl Davis and Charlie White spoiled Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's homecoming Thursday night, beating the Olympic and world champions in the short dance and taking a big step toward winning their second title at the World Figure Skating Championships.
The Americans scored a record 77.12 points for a program that was so entertaining it masked the incredible skill behind it.
They were going to be tough to beat, anyway, but the Canadians didn't help themselves by getting noticeably out of unison midway through.
Virtue and Moir, who grew up in the London suburbs, are 3.25 points behind, a significant gap in ice dance. The free dance is Saturday.
Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev are third.
