St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 7710 E. State Blvd., plans to start work in June on a $6.4 million project including construction of a new 27,000-square-foot addition on the south end of the church.

“This whole project really is about how can we continue to expand our ministries,” both to members and to the community, said Gene Friedrich, head of the communications committee, a subgroup of the church building committee.

This is the first building project the congregation has initiated in 35 years, Friedrich said. In that time, membership has grown significantly to more than 2,000 people, and the church has run out of room.

The new addition, which will get underway in August, will include a new gymnasium, narthex and offices, Friedrich said. The work will take a year to complete and also will involve demolition of the octagonal portion of the building currently housing church offices.

Weigand Construction, which won the contract for the work, plans to start other portions of the project in June. Those involve major upgrades to St. Peter's school on the east side of Maysville Road, including air conditioning classrooms, a new entryway and updating the electrical system, Friedrich said. The work also includes renovating about 6,500 square feet in the church's lower level to create more space for the preschool program.
