Indiana coach Tom Crean spoke with the media following the Hoosiers' 83-62 NCAA tourney win over James Madison on Friday in Dayton.

Assessing IU's performance:

“To have six guys with nine or more points, to have Remy Abell with seven points, to be able to play as many people as we did (12) was a big deal.

"Our preparation was at a high level. They dove into what we wanted to do. We kept them off the foul line. They are a very good foul-shooting team. They have an ability to get to the rim and play at the post, and draw fouls. We did a good job of not allowing that to happen.”

On IU's defensive play:

“We played excellent. We let our guy down a little bit late, and we didn't make many adjustments at that point. We didn't switch defenses, which we would have if we felt it would have warranted it at that point.

“I also was trying to make sure I was getting people out of the game. I would think in the first 30 to 32 minutes we were really at a high level. We had a ton of deflections.”

On concern about overlooking James Madison:

“I never worried about it. My only concern was that if we didn't play well, we were going to be under-worked. We worked going to be over-worked. We really did try to flip the switch after the Wisconsin game.

“There was never a drop-off in our preparation. You always worry about it because that's human nature, but there's nothing I saw from them that concerned me whatsoever.”

On assistant coach Kenny Johnson's scouting of James Madison:

“He was very forceful and demonstrative in this scout. That showed his maturing as a coach. He knew (James Madison) because of being in that league (Johnson was an assistant at Towson last season). He did a phenomenal job of getting that across. He had the details down and he made sure our players understood.”
