A fight between two family members left one man dead Wednesday night, according to Fort Wayne Police.
Thursday afternoon, the Allen County Coroner's Office identified the dead man as Russell Todd Jewel, 42, of Fort Wayne. After an autopsy, the coroner ruled his death a homicide and said the cause of death was a gunshot wound or wounds.
At 10:23 p.m. police responded to the 5000 block of Wisteria Lane to a call about a domestic battery in progress. While officers were responding, emergency dispatch said one of the family members involved in the altercation shot the other, according to Officer Jason Anthony, FWPD spokesman.
Officers found Jewel, who had been shot; paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead, Anthony said in a news release. The other family member was taken by paramedics to a local hospital for injuries received in the fight.
Detectives interviewed witnesses and crime scene technicians processed the scene for evidence. The Allen County prosecutor's office will determine if criminal charges are warranted.
This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD, the prosecutor's office and the coroner's office. The coroner's office counted Jewel's death as the 20th homicide of 2013 in Fort Wayne and Allen County.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority assisted at the scene.
