With barely more than a week until the GM Truck Homecoming, organizers are hoping for a last-minute rush.
So far, 87 truck owners have signed up for a parade through Fort Wayne on Sept. 14 – the centerpiece event of the homecoming, said Stephanie Jentgen, who is a spokeswoman for the Allen County GM assembly plant that builds the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Organizers are hoping for 500 trucks in the parade; 387 trucks would break the world record for the longest parade of pickup trucks, Jentgen said.
The point isn't to dazzle bystanders with chrome, custom scoops and the usual accessories of a weekend cruise-in.
”Any GM truck is invited – old, new, pretty, dented,” wrote Jentgen in an email, adding that the “goal is not show-quality trucks – rather to show the loyalty of our truck owners.”
Many of the people who have registered for the parade are from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. Others are coming from as far away as Maryland and Texas, she said.
The homecoming will be held in the northeast parking lot of Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Ave.
Participation in the GM Truck Parade is limited to the first 500 GM truck owners to register at www.gmtruckhomecoming.com.
Any GM truck owner who attends the GM Truck Homecoming can be part of the GM Fun Truck Show by signing up www.gmtruckhomecoming.com. Prizes will be awarded for: oldest GM truck, newest GM truck, most mileage on a GM truck present and the GM truck that traveled farthest to attend the event.
