FORT WAYNE — The reconstruction of a bridge on South Anthony Boulevard will close the busy north-south thoroughfare for the next nine months, beginning Friday.
Traffic will be directed around the construction site.
South Anthony Boulevard will be closed between Berry Street and Lake Avenue beginning Friday and continuing through May.
Northbound and southbound detour routes have been established by the city of Fort Wayne’s Traffic Engineering Department.
Northbound vehicles can use the following detour: Berry Street to Coombs Street to Tecumseh Street to Columbia Avenue to Lake Avenue and back to Anthony Boulevard.
Southbound traffic can take Lake Avenue west to Tecumseh Street to Coombs Street, east on Wayne Street and back to Anthony Boulevard.
Replacement of the bridge is crucial because the structure – built in the early 1970s as a temporary bridge – is deteriorating, according to Allen County Highway Department officials.
The unstable condition of the bridge prompted county officials to put a weight limit of 12 tons on the bridge last year, forcing trucks and buses to find other routes.
The project is expected to cost about $2 million, which will come from the county’s major bridge fund.
The contractor, Primco Inc., will remove the entire deck and reconstruct the caps on top of the piers to accommodate modern, stronger support beams under the deck.
