Bishop Dwenger pushed Concordia Lutheran to the limit but it wasn't enough as the Cadets survived a thrilling five-game match to win the Class 3A volleyball sectional Saturday at Bishop Dwenger.
Dwenger fought back from a 2-0 match deficit to win the next two games, 25-23 and 29-27, and force a deciding game. Concordia had a chance to win in Game 5 with a 14-13 lead but the Saints scored the next point to tie the score. The Cadets got the next two points to win the game 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Concordia, ranked seventh in the final state coaches poll, travels to sixth-ranked Fairfield for the regional Tuesday.
Tionna Williams, a 6-2 junior middle blocker, led the Cadets with 26 kills. She also contributed 20 digs, three aces and two blocks. Dejour Young added 13 kills.
Rachel Kammeyer (34 assists) and Kara Bowersox (19 assists) were responsible for feeding Williams and Young and the rest of the Cadets as the team finished with 56 kills for the match.
Other leaders statistically for Concordia were Grace Miller with 35 digs and freshman Audrey Kruse with four aces.
Bishop Dwenger was led by Olivia Current with 22 kills and eight blocks. Jennifer O'Daniel had 25 assists for the Saints while Abbie Grace Lee led in digs with 30 and aces with four.
Elsewhere in sectional volleyball championship games:
After losing Game 1 20-25, Carroll came back to beat DeKalb in the next three, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-11 to capture the North Side Sectional. Jackie Quade led the Chargers with 14 kills. Kate Novack and Emma Ruskaup had 24 and 20 assists respectively as the Chargers recorded 47 kills in the match.
Other stat leaders for Carroll were Remi Swoverland with 10 digs, Katie Claxton with two blocks and Quade and Ruskaup with four aces each.
Carroll will host Homestead at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the regional. The Spartans advanced to the regional by sweeping Jay County, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-23 in the championship match of the South Side Sectional.
Bellmont won the Heritage Sectional with a three-game sweep over Mississinewa in the finals. The fifth-ranked Squaws will host No. 2 Delta on Tuesday in the regional.
Woodlan won its own sectional by sweeping South Adams 25-10, 25-12 and 25-5. The Warriors travel to Westview on Tuesday for a regional matchup.
Blackhawk Christian swept Bethany Christian 25-13, 25-9 and 25-18 to win its own sectional. The Braves will travel to Union Mills to play South Central in their regional matchup Tuesday.
