Sleek and classy best describes Main Street Bistro & Martini Lounge, right down to the shape of the water goblets - a cross between a wine glass and a brandy snifter.
This upscale restaurant's color palate is a rich gold and black, accentuated by lacquered wall panels in a shiny red and black swirl pattern. Tables are topped with large sheets of white paper, which soften the edges of the bold decor and offer a casual feeling.
Our server explained that the paper is both recyclable and functional. Many people use it to jot down notes, then tear off what they've written when they leave.
As a compulsive doodler, I couldn't just leave it blank.
My friend opted for the Main Street Bistro power lunch - a half sandwich served with a choice of fries, house rub chips & dip, cup of soup or side salad.
The power lunch is offered Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu says “Lunch in 30 minutes or less.” Our meals came well before 30 minutes passed.
She chose the Naan Chicken Club sandwich and a cup of roasted red pepper tomato bisque. My friend said the bisque was “amazing”; the red pepper was perfectly balanced with the tomato - not too spicy.
The Naan flatbread in the chicken club sandwich was lightly grilled and wasn't soggy. She noted the bacon was crisp, not chewy, and the spinach pesto with chunks of hazelnuts tasted very fresh. She said the grilled chicken was good, but she might order something else next time.
I decided to have the house side salad and a crock of French onion soup.
My side salad consisted of mixed greens sprinkled with blue cheese crumbles and lightly dressed with raspberry vinaigrette. It had just the right amount of dressing and blue cheese. The dressing had a nice bite to it.
The French onion crock was loaded with lightly caramelized onions and was topped with large croutons and melted cheese.
When I first tasted the soup, I noticed a sage flavor, then the onion. The rich beef broth was well seasoned. I would definitely order this again.
The dessert menu, “Happy Endings,” lists many options from among cheesecakes and layered treats.
My friend ordered the Main Street Bistro Peanut Butter Cup for dessert. According to the menu, this is the restaurant's signature layered dessert.
Her dessert came in a clear glass cup, so you could see each decadent layer. Vanilla bean ice cream was topped with peanut butter mousse, garnished with devil's food cake crumbles. She stirred it to combine all the ingredients and when she took the first bite, she said it was “very rich.” So rich, she could only eat about half. I tasted it and had the same reaction.
I tried what the restaurant billed as Fort Wayne's Best Cheesecake. It was beautifully presented; the cheesecake was drizzled with chocolate ganache sauce. It was delicious - each bite was better than the previous one. The subtlety of the cheese flavor and the sweet ganache were the perfect marriage of flavors. The texture was very smooth and creamy.
I don't know if it really is Fort Wayne's best cheesecake, so I'll reserve judgment on that until I sample every cheesecake in this city.
Considering how new the restaurant is, the staff was well-acquainted with the menu, and we experienced excellent service.
Be sure to check the website for the latest menu options. Our server said they are developing separate menus for lunch, dinner and late-night appetizers.
