The publisher of two tabloid magazines says it never intended to imply that Tom Cruise had abandoned his daughter after his divorce.

The statement from Bauer Publishing on Friday accompanied news that Cruise and the tabloids had reached a confidential settlement in a defamation case filed by the actor.

Bauer operates Life & Style and In Touch magazines. Cruise sued the magazines over a pair of stories that suggested he had abandoned his daughter Suri after divorcing actress Katie Holmes.

His lawyer, Bert Fields, called the stories outrageous and said that Cruise spoke to his daughter frequently while working on a pair of movie shoots that kept him overseas.

The magazines’ statements said they regret if anyone interpreted their stories as meaning Cruise had cut all contact to his daughter.

Israel performance

An Israeli promoter for the Pixies says the American alternative rock band will perform in Israel next summer – four years after the band canceled a concert following a deadly Israeli raid on a pro-Palestinian Turkish aid flotilla to Gaza.

The Nidar Oz publicity group said Monday the Pixies canceled its 2010 concert because of the “tense security situation.” It didn’t elaborate why the band has decided to perform in Israel now.

A number of high-profile musicians have refused to perform in Israel because of its policies toward the Palestinians, including British rockers Elvis Costello and Roger Waters.

The Pixies’ website list an appearance with American rockers Soundgarden in Tel Aviv on June 17 and 18.
