Schnitzelhaus to open for homeless, veterans

It was cold. The city was quiet. News reports were sharing that some of the soup kitchens were closed.

And, like many other restaurants, Das Schnitzelhaus at 1522 W. Main St. was closed because of the weather. Owner Cornell Taubert, though, was working – on an idea.

“I got the idea, ‘Why not do something good?’ ” he says. “(Help) people who need some food or somewhere warm to sit.”

Today, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Taubert will open Das Schnitzelhaus and offer free meals to the homeless and veterans. He’s unsure of the menu – wanting to see what he had in stock – but it will include the German specialties he’s known for. There might be potato leek soup, warm potato salad, schnitzel and roast pork. Four or five items, he says.

Taubert posted about the event on the restaurant’s Facebook page,, seeking volunteers to serve. He says the response has been great and anyone who wants to help is welcome.

“It’s just to give somebody something to eat and somewhere warm to sit,” Taubert says, adding that he wants to “be nice to the people who need it right now.”

Das Schnitzelhaus will tentatively reopen for normal hours Thursday.
