Mother, baby killed in Indiana highway crash

LOWELL — Police in northwestern Indiana say a woman and her baby were killed she lost control of her SUV on a slick highway and slid into the path of a semitrailer.

The Lake County coroner's office says 37-year-old Stacy Walstra of Hebron and 1-month-old Jace Walstra both suffered fatal blunt force trauma injuries in Thursday's crash.

The sheriff's department says icy road conditions on Indiana 2 near the town of Lowell likely caused Walstra's SUV to fishtail and cross into oncoming traffic. The semi driver wasn't hurt.

John Bryant tells The Times of Munster he heard the crash near his farm along the highway and saw a deputy pull the baby from the wreckage. Bryant says he wishes highway crews had treated the highway earlier in the day.
