The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Here is today's Notre Dame featured commit:
Position: Defensive end
High School: Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Missouri
Weight: 253 pounds
Commitment date: June 26, 2013
Other scholarship offers: 14, including Illinois, Michigan State, Missouri and Northern Illinois.
Ranking: Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 13 player in the state of Missouri; rated a three-star recruit by Scout.com and the No. 79 defensive end in the country.
Notre Dame depth chart at position: Junior Sheldon Day, junior Chase Hounshell, sophomore Isaac Rochell, senior Justin Utupo.
Scouting report: A hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker that Notre Dame likes to utilize in its defensive schemes, Bonner is a good pickup along the defensive front seven. With a frame that likely could add 20-25 pounds of muscle without seriously hampering his mobility, Bonner has a high ceiling if he can develop for the Fighting Irish. Bonner's long-term spot is likely on the edge for Coach Brian Kelly's team, but it may be a year or so until he has the ideal body type for the position. If needed, Bonner could be penciled in as a linebacker if depth issues arise. Bonner appeals to the Notre Dame coaching staff in that he can be molded to fit a variety of roles, similar to the departed Prince Shembo. It may take a year or two, but Bonner should make an impact for the Irish defense.
