The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Here is today's Indiana's featured commit:
Position: Defensive end
High School: St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio
Weight: 245 pounds
Commitment date: July 19, 2013
Other scholarship offers: Eight, including Boston College, Bowling Green and Purdue.
Ranking: Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 73 player in the state of Ohio; rated a three-star recruit by Scout.com and the No. 56 defensive end in the country.
Indiana depth chart at position: Redshirt senior Ryan Phillis, junior Nick Mangieri, redshirt senior John Laihinen, redshirt junior Zack Shaw, sophomore David Kenney, redshirt sophomore Shawn Heffern.
Scouting report: A tall, rangy player off the edge, Carovillano is a product of a great prep program at St. Xavier. Recruited primarily as a pass rusher with the frame to add pounds and become more of a four-down player, it is hoped Carovillano will help the porous Indiana defense put more pressure on the quarterback, thereby helping the back end of the defense cut down on passing yards allowed. There is a lot of bodies on the edge for the Hoosiers on the depth chart, but a lot of them are unproven. If Carovillano can elevate his game and show he can be an effective pass rusher, he could see playing time as a freshman as Coach Kevin Wilson attempts to field a better defensive unit in 2014.
