The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Here is today's Purdue featured commit:
Position: Offensive guard
High School: Marion Franklin High School in Columbus, Ohio
Weight: 310 pounds
Commitment date: December 15, 2013
Other scholarship offers: Nine, including Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky and Ball State.
Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com; rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 38 offensive guard in the country.
Purdue depth chart at position: Redshirt sophomore Jason King, redshirt sophomore Jordan Roos.
Scouting report: While recruiting playmakers at the skill positions is important to help improve Purdue's woeful offense, nothing gets done without a solid offensive line. Patterson can help that position in a big way after choosing the Boilermakers over several other decent Division I programs late last year. Patterson is a massive lineman out of talent-rich Ohio and a player that brings some versatility to the line with the ability to move to other positions. Purdue lost both of its starting offensive guards to graduation and will be grooming their replacements in the fall. While Patterson is unlikely to win one of those starting jobs, he may not be afforded a year to redshirt and refine his game if he is needed to provide depth at guard. Whatever happens, this is a solid prospect get for the Boilermakers in a player who should help improve the overall talent level of the offensive front.
