The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Here is today's Purdue featured commit:
Position: Tight end
High School: Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia
Weight: 225 pounds
Commitment date: December 16, 2013
Other scholarship offers: None.
Ranking: Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com; rated a two-star prospect by Scout.com.
Purdue depth chart at position: Redshirt senior Justin Sinz.
Scouting report: The Boilermakers showed they like to utilize the tight end under Coach Darrell Hazell when Sinz ended up as the leading receiver for Purdue in yards (340) and touchdown receptions (four). Herman has the physical frame to come in and break into the two-deep as a freshman if other youngsters do not step up. He is a solid pass catcher and also is able to stay in and help run block. Typically, a tight end coming from the prep ranks is proficient in one of these areas and has to learn the other, but Herdman appears equally adept at both. He also played linebacker in high school, showing he has the physicality to play rough as well. Herdman's only Division I offer was from Purdue, but he is shaping up to be a great long-term pickup for the Boilermakers.
