When he was elected chairman of Allen County's Democratic Party in 2012, John Court said he wasn't sure why a $21,900 federal tax lien had been filed against him in 2009 – but he promised that he “would deal with it.”

Since then, however, two additional liens totaling $121,856 have been filed against the 37-year-old Court, who came to Allen County from St. Joseph County in 2005 and said in 2012 he had not knowingly failed to pay any taxes.

Court and wife Jennifer were named on the 2009 Internal Revenue Service lien, which covered a period ending Dec. 31, 2006. Court is listed solely on the filings for periods ending Dec. 31, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2011, which were filed in the Allen County Recorder's office Jan. 28.

Court told The News-Sentinel on Monday that he is “making payments (on the overdue taxes). I want to put this behind me.” County Recorder John McGauley said his office has no record of how much Court might have repaid, but said the lien filed in 2009 had not been released by the IRS.

Court succeeded Mike Bynum as chairman after winning a 74-1 vote over the Rev. Michael Latham.
