Fifteen youngsters learned about grocery shopping Thursday as they strolled through Kroger on Coventry Lane for a tour and taste-testing.
The first- through fifth-graders from Indian Village Elementary School’s functional skills classes began their tour near a popular aisle for any child – the toys.
Tour guide and store employee Bonnie Harris joked with the students and said she was sure no one had much interest in the items on those shelves.
“I like toys!” said third-grader Kolten Thomas-Grier, tugging on his teacher’s arm.
The students were led through the store, stopping to look at jewelry and fresh produce before walking to the back of the aisles and into the storage area.
“This is the part you only get to go with me or if you work here,” Harris explained.
“Whoooa,” one of the students said as the doors swung open to reveal pallet upon pallet of extra inventory.
Harris showed students the cooler and freezer area, the machine used to crush boxes and cases of snacks waiting to be placed on the shelves.
By that point in the tour, tummies were rumbling.
As students reached the deli area, Harris began picking up samples – slices of salami, blocks of cheese and cookies for students to enjoy later.
Annabelle Schultis, a first-grader, didn’t have much to say as she snacked on a slice of salami, but offered a quick review of the sample.
“Mmmmmmm good,” she said, smiling.
•Henry Henderson, a Heritage High School senior, recently received the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship – a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship awarded to golf caddies. Henderson, who works as a caddie at the Orchard Ridge Country Club, will attend Purdue University to become a pediatrician.
• The Bosch Community Fund recently presented the East Noble and Central Noble school districts with nearly $35,000 in grants to assist with four projects that will support students and teachers in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math and environmental education.
•Preston Barr of New Haven has been selected as a University of Kansas Men of Merit for positively defining masculinity through changing norms, taking action and leading by example. Barr is a senior in business management and leadership at the University of Kansas.
•Several Fort Wayne teachers were recently selected as 2014 Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship Winners. FWCS: Christine J. Milakovic, Anthis Career Center; Tonya L. •Tanner Grant of Fort Wayne has been awarded a merit scholarship from Oklahoma City University based on his freshman grade point average and ACT/SAT test scores.
•Two Trine University alumni have been appointed to the Board of Trustees: Dr. Alan W. McGee, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgery of the spine, and Stephen R. LaHood, a Trine alumnus who served on the board from 2006 to 2010.
•A Trine University trustee and founding partner of Metal Technologies Inc. has been selected to be the university’s distinguished speaker for spring 2014. Rick L. James will share his life story and business success during his “Keys to Success” speech at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Fabiani Theatre.
•Ivy Tech Community College Northeast has received a $45,000 grant from the Edward M. and Mary McCrea Wilson Foundation toward the College’s New Venture Competition program.
•Career Matchmaker, an academic, speed dating-style event, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ivy Tech’s Student Life Center, 3701 Dean Drive.
