80 years for abusing 2 girls

Facing 10 counts related to the abuse of two girls that could have put him in prison for over 100 years, 55-year-old John L. Newman pleaded guilty Monday to two of the charges.

But the guilty plea will still result in an 80-year prison sentence, according to court documents.

Newman, of the 800 block of Wilt Street, was accused of molesting two girls who were known to him.

According to court documents, the girls’ mothers went to his home to look for them, but they were not where they were supposed to be.

Later, while they were being interviewed at the Bill Lewis Center for Children, the girls said they had been with Newman, and when he heard their mothers looking for them, he told them to put their clothes on.

The girls then detailed multiple instances in which they said Newman performed sex acts on them, took videos of them and made each watch while he molested the other.

He is accused of abusing them between May and Dec. 10, 2013.

Newman is also accused of performing sexual conduct in the presence of a minor and of child exploitation. Police recovered digital images of Newman with one of the girls in sexually explicit positions, according to court documents.

He will be sentenced in April. If the judge accepts the plea agreement, the additional eight counts, which range from Class C to Class A felonies, will be dismissed.
