OK, technically this isn't restaurant news, but it's about food and it's exciting.
Earth Fare is opening its first Fort Wayne store at 8 a.m. May 7 at 704 E. Dupont Road, where Scott's used to be. The easiest way to describe Earth Fare is that it's a grocery chain that offers healthy foods. Earth Fare has three stores in Indiana; the Fort Wayne location will be the fourth in the state. Earth Fare has stores in nine states in the South and Midwest.
Earth Fare describes its food as being “as close to the ground as it gets.” The stores do not sell foods with high-fructose corn syrup, artificial fats or artificial trans fats, artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones in its fresh meat and dairy, and no bleached or bromated flour. What you can expect to see is a wide variety of local, organic and healthy foods. The stores seek to buy produce from within 100 miles of the store. Departments include fruit and vegetable produce; full-service meat, poultry and seafood; cheese; body care and supplement; and an on-site bakery.
Shoppers also can buy ready-to-go meals from the grill, salad bar and prepared food case.

Another store that specializes in fresh, healthy, natural foods is taking shape at 4320 Coldwater Road, where Borders bookstore used to be. Fresh Thyme Farmers Market is a new chain that signed a lease on the property in January.
The company says the store will open this summer.
Like Earth Fare, Fresh Thyme's emphasis will be on fresh, healthy, natural and organic food, with the heart of the store being a bountiful produce department. The company plans to find local sources for much of its produce.

Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill will have a visitor this week. The chain's vice president of culinary will be at the Jefferson Pointe restaurant training the staff on how to prepare a new item: beer can chicken. Smokey Bones has been working on a huge overhaul of its menu, and test menu options are available only in this market, so it might be a good time for a visit.
The first time I saw Two-EE's Winery in Huntington I was intrigued by the exterior architecture. It's basically a pre-engineered metal building made by a company called Varco Pruden. A Fort Wayne-based designer-builder and general contractor gave it a unique look using stone walls.
For the company's efforts, Varco Pruden named CME to its 2014 Hall of Fame, recognizing it as the “Best” in the retail category. It was designed by Nathan Moore of CME.
Two-EE's has plans to expand its outdoor seating area and production and perhaps add a brewery.
