The Fort Wayne Mad Ants' opponent in the NBA Development League Finals brings a dose of familiarity and a dash of motivation.
Santa Cruz advanced to the finals with a 148-128 win over Rio Grande Valley on Monday to set up the best-of-three showdown with the Mad Ants. Game 1 will be 9:30 p.m. Fort Wayne time Thursday in Santa Cruz, Game 2 will be 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Coliseum and Game 3 (if necessary) will be 7 p.m. Monday at the coliseum.
Two of the Warriors' players are former Mad Ants – guard Cameron Jones and forward Joe Alexander – and both are key components. Plus, Santa Cruz knocked the Mad Ants out of the playoffs in the first round last season.
The teams met only once this season, with the Ants winning 101-97 in the D-League Showcase in January in Reno, Nev. Ron Howard scored 28 points and Trey McKinney-Jones 25 in that win. Jones led Santa Cruz with 23 points.
In the Game 3 win over Rio Grande Valley, Santa Cruz had four players top 20 points: Lance Goulbourne 29, Seth Curry 28, Mychel Thompson 25 and Jones 24. Goulbourne had 14 rebounds, and Curry dished out eight assists.
Games 1 and 3 of the D-League finals will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. Game 2 will be televised on tape delay at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
