FORT WAYNE — While some children played in a courtyard, blissfully unaware of the grim scene in a nearby parking lot, others pressed their faces to a metal fence to get a closer look.

In that parking lot were detectives and crime scene technicians focused on a black, four-door BMW.

Inside the car was a dead man, there for an unknown amount of time – but long enough that at least one crime scene technician who approached the car had on a breathing mask.

As of Wednesday evening, police had not declared they were investigating the case at McCormick Place Apartments as a homicide, instead labeling it as a suspicious death.

About 6:30 p.m., police were called to a small parking lot in the 2200 block of Edsall Avenue after a man reported that someone he did not know was in his car and was possibly dead, said Chris Felton, spokesman for the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Felton said police found a man in the car but could not provide an approximate age or how long the man had been there.

A security employee for the apartments was telling residents the man in the car was shot, but Felton said he could not confirm a cause of death.

He said the department hopes to find clues in any surveillance video available at the apartment complex.

The car where the man was found faced a large grassy area in the complex, filled with children and others playing before police expanded the area roped off with police tape so people could not easily see in the car.

On the street nearby, Fort Wayne Police Chief Garry Hamilton talked with investigators.

A resident of the apartment complex said she thought she heard a single bang Tuesday night but chalked it up to ongoing fireworks in the area.

Another area resident who lives on Edsall Avenue said he did not hear any shots Wednesday afternoon or evening.
