On Saturday at the Three Rivers Festival, Mayor Tom Henry named July 12 Coney Island Day in honor of the longtime Fort Wayne establishment celebrating its 100 year anniversary.

In honor of the celebration, Coney Island held the first hot dog eating contest. From 100 contestants, only 10 were sent to compete at TRF Saturday.

The rules were simple, eat as many hot dogs as you can in 10 minutes. Only one victor came out on top and that was Alex Choinski. Wearing a hot dog costume and eating an astonishing 19 hot dogs, Choinski walked away with the hot dog king crown and the contest trophy.

Second place, with 14 hot dogs, was Greg Quandt. Quandt had one strategy when setting up to the table for the contest.

“My strategy was not eating all day and as soon a the contest started I just took water and dumped it on the top of the hot dogs to make them soggy. Then it was all about chewing consistently and just trying to break through that wall,” he said.
