SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — An Iowa filmmaker plans to make a documentary about Abraham Lincoln’s tomb in Springfield, Ill.

Chris Ryder of Le Claire, Iowa, is partnering with the Lincoln Monument Association on the project to mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death. The association will sell copies of the documentary. Organizers will use a crowd-funding website to fund the project, which has a maximum budget of $50,000. The online fundraising campaign ends Aug. 10 and needs a minimum of $15,000.

“It will be a perfect balance of interviews, narration and musical interludes with cinematic touches,” Ryder said.

Ryder said he came up with the idea for the documentary while watching YouTube videos about Lincoln’s Tomb. Ryder says the documentary will start with the arrival of Lincoln’s funeral train in Springfield in 1865. It will include details about the construction of the tomb, the attempted theft of Lincoln’s body and the movement of the body more than a dozen times due to a low water table.

Board member Mike Kienzler said Ryder’s proposal was attractive.

“He has a good sense of the history of the tomb and the way people think about Lincoln when they are at the tomb,” Kienzler said.

The Lincoln Monument Association board voted in March to authorize the documentary. Ryder is aiming to make it about 75 minutes long.

Ryder’s portfolio includes documentaries, commercials, theatrical productions and music videos.
