Ewing, Fairfield project to begin

Conversion of traffic part of larger project

Traffic in downtown Fort Wayne is about to undergo a major change.

Starting Monday, Ewing Street will have two-way traffic, and a section of Fairfield Avenue will close. Fairfield will eventually have two-way traffic as well.

The two-way travel on Ewing will occur between Superior Street and Jefferson Boulevard, the city announced Tuesday.

While Ewing is changed to accommodate two-way travel, Fairfield will close between Superior and Main streets, the city said. A three-way stop sign will be put at the intersection of Ewing, Superior and Wells streets.

The changeover begins Monday and is expected to be fully operational by Tuesday afternoon, Frank Suarez, spokesman for the city, said.

The work on the two streets is part of a larger project that will include a roundabout where Fairfield, Ewing, Superior and Wells meet and permanent two-way travel on Fairfield and Ewing.

Both streets will also have center turn lanes and outside bicycle lanes. The sidewalks will be moved away from traffic to create a buffer between cars and pedestrians.

The Ewing-Fairfield Conversion Project includes reworking the area of the Wells Street bridge, which is also being changed. The bridge will have two lanes in each direction of travel, with barriers to separate the sidewalks and bike lanes.

The City Council this month approved a $2.8 million contract with Brooks Construction for the first phase of the project, which will build the roundabout, reconfigure the Wells Street Bridge and put Main Street on a lane diet.

The City Council voted in December 2012 to use $3 million from the Legacy Fund – which comes from the lease and sale of the city’s old electric utility – to help pay for the project. It will also get funding from a special taxing district in the area.
