Larger turnout seen for job fair

70 firms, 3,000 jobs on tap for Aug. 18 gathering at IPFW

This year’s job fair sponsored by U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman and IPFW will offer more than 3,000 job openings – triple the number of last year’s version.

Stutzman, R-3rd, and IPFW announced Thursday that their annual job fair will be 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at IPFW’s Walb Student Union Classic Ballroom.

At least 70 employers will take part, compared with about 50 last year.

Allison McSherry, deputy district director for Stutzman, said in an email that the large increases in employers and job openings “may be a sign that our economy is improving.”

McSherry said organizers have not expanded their outreach efforts to attract employers.

“We do have some companies attending who participated in past job fairs that we have hosted,” she said, “but we also have quite a few new companies and organizations – which is obviously a good sign.”

Participating employers are from a range of industries, including manufacturing, machining, health care, financial services, retail, restaurants, food and beverage sellers, consumer services, freight hauling, packaging, recycling, government and military.

Several universities and colleges in northeast Indiana will participate.

An interview training session, sponsored by WorkOne Northeast and IPFW’s Office of Career Services, will be from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 in Walb Student Union.

The job fair and interview training session are free and open to the public.

Stutzman plans to visit with participating employers and job-seekers, McSherry said.

Stutzman – who is challenged in the Nov. 4 election by Democrat Justin Kuhnle and Libertarian Scott Wise – has sponsored the job fair every year since 2011, his first year in Congress. Then-Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., was the sponsor from 2004 through 2009.
