The athletic director of Bluffton High School was taken to Lutheran Hospital after he was struck and knocked down by a car driven by the school's principal, according to Bluffton Police.

When Bluffton Patrolman Brent Archbold last heard a report on Athletic Director Steve Thompson's condition, he was headed into surgery at Lutheran Hospital for head trauma.

The injury occurred shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday. Archbold said that according to witnesses, Principal Steve Baker was driving his personal vehicle in the parking lot between the high school and middle school following a staff meeting. Thompson was walking with a group of other people.

The witnesses said that some “horseplay” took place between Thompson and Baker, Archbold said. Specifically, the patrolman said, witness accounts indicate that the principal drove up behind Thompson and honked his horn. Thompson tossed a duffel he was carrying onto the hood of Baker's vehicle. When Thompson reached to retrieve the duffel, he was struck by Baker's vehicle, fell and struck his head on the pavement, according to witness accounts.

He was taken to Lutheran by Bluffton EMS. Archbold said the investigation continues.
