Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control's community relations and education specialist, Peggy Bender, will retire effective Sept. 1. For 29 years Bender has pioneered numerous outreach programs, including fund-raising events, a spay-neuter assistance program to assist limited-income pet owners, the Animal Care Teens Program, the KIND Club Program for teachers and children, nationally recognized animal safety education, and video programs such as The Scoop and the award-winning KIND Club Show series. Many have come to know her through regular appearances on WANE-TV's Pet of the Week.

Bender will step down to work as creative director in nonprofit video marketing. She will be replaced through the promotion of the current volunteer coordinator of six years, Jodi Hamilton. The public is invited to stop by Animal Care & Control, 3020 Hillegas Road, Aug. 22 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. for a farewell reception.
