The athletic director at Bluffton High School continues his recovery after he suffered a serious head injury in the school’s parking lot.
Steve Thompson is now listed in serious condition, the Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District announced Tuesday afternoon.
Thompson was injured the morning of Aug. 7 when he and a group of other high school staff were headed back to the high school from a meeting at the middle school.
As the group walked through the parking the lot, the high school principal, Steve Baker, drove up behind them and honked, police said.
In response, Thompson tossed a gym bag on Baker’s hood and as Baker turned to go around the group, Thompson inadvertently stepped into the path of Baker’s car, police said.
The impact knocked Thompson to the ground, and he suffered a serious head injury.
Thompson’s family issued a statement through the school that said they are “humbled” by the support they’ve received.
The family asks that supporters not visit Thompson at the hospital as he continues his recovery.
