A 29-year-old former teacher at Woodlan Junior-Senior High School is charged with child seduction, accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student at the school.

According to court documents, Paige E. Mostella, of the 7600 block of Glenoak Parkway, began spending time in her office with the 17-year-old male student in early 2013.

The incidents came to light during a polygraph examination of the teenager as part of his juvenile probation period, according to court documents.

Mostella is charged with two Class D felony counts of child seduction, each punishable by six months to three years in prison.

Under Indiana law, teens can consent to sex when they are 16 or older. However, it is a felony if a person in a position of authority over the teen, such as a teacher or a military recruiter or a stepparent, engages in sexual activity with the teen if he or she is 16 to 18 years old.

The teen told police he and Mostella, also known as Paige Groves, would frequently play-fight in her office. According to court documents, Mostella was employed as a special-education teacher at Woodlan High School at the time.

During their second encounter, the teen said he asked her whether he could have sex with her and she allowed it, according to court documents.

The third time the two had a sexual encounter, it was during a Saturday track meet. He said he asked Mostella whether he could have sex with her because “it would improve his throwing ability during the track meet,” according to court documents. He covered the windows in her office with a jacket to keep people from looking inside, according to court documents.

The teen told police Mostella knew he was 17 at the time and bought him a brand-new outfit for his 18th birthday. She told him she could lose her job by being with him and said the relationship was wrong, but they would talk on the phone while her husband was at work, according to court documents.

Indiana’s Department of Education lists Mostella as a current teacher within the East Allen County Schools district. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Saint Francis and is licensed to teach language arts, according to the state’s website.

EACS officials said they have cooperated fully with the investigation and said Mostella is no longer employed with the district.

She was arrested Wednesday afternoon.
