The man who sexually assaulted a rural DeKalb County woman this week was on the prowl when he saw his victim outside and attacked, tying her up and threatening her with a knife, police said Thursday.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department released an artist's sketch of the attacker Thursday as well as new details about the woman's harrowing assault inside her home. Detectives are asking for the public's help in identifying the assailant.
The attack began about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of Indiana 1, about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Hamilton, when the man pulled up in a box-style maroon sedan and asked the victim, who was outside mowing her yard, about two cars she had for sale, police said.
When the woman went inside to get a pen so she could write down contact information, he threatened her with a large knife and forced his way inside the house. He then tied up the woman and her 2 1/2-year-old and forced the woman to perform a sex act on him while the child was present. The mother received minor injuries in the assault as well, police said.
Before leaving, he barricaded the woman and child inside the house and took her cell and house phones. He fled north on Indiana 1.
The woman freed herself and ran across the road to a neighbor's home, where she called police. The woman did not know her attacker and police have no suspects, DeKalb County Sheriff's Department Detective Lee Stoy said.
"I think he was actively looking for a victim, and the woman outside mowing her lawn represented a crime of opportunity for him," Stoy, the lead investigator, said.
The attacker is described as 5-foot-5, white, weighing 225 pounds, in his 20s or early 30s, with brown hair, a full beard and mustache, stained teeth and a large stomach.
He was last seen driving the older model four-door sedan, possibly a late 1980s Buick Century.
